The APC Dr Erica Sainsbury Pharmacist Supervisor Award

The APC Dr Erica Sainsbury Awards have been established to recognise and reward leaders in pharmacy education and practice. The Pharmacist Supervisor Award have been established to recognise and reward leaders in pharmacy education and practice. The Pharmacist Supervisor Award recognises pharmacists who display the attributes and skills considered invaluable in the training of pharmacy interns and learners during the period of supervised practice, work integrated learning or training that leads to general registration.

What does the award entail?

The recipient of the award will receive a $1,000 monetary personal gift and a certificate of recognition from the APC.

Award presentation

The presentation of the award is to be made at the APC’s annual Emeritus Professor Lloyd Sansom AO Distinguished Lecture series held in Canberra in November each year. APC will cover all travel and accommodation expenses. Award recipient names will be published on the APC website.

Eligibility

This award is for registered pharmacists who at the time of the application are either:
1. A preceptor approved by the Pharmacy Board of Australia
2. A supervising pharmacist who has been delegated the role of supervising learner(s) by the approved pharmacist preceptor.
Nominees must NOT have a condition on their registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
Previous winners of the award cannot be nominated again.
Previous unsuccessful nominations may be nominated again, provided they meet the eligibility criteria and submitted by a learner they are currently supervising.

Application

This award will be based on nomination by provisional registered pharmacists (interns) and pharmacy programs learners only. This is a great way for learners to say thank you and to recognise the great work and support of their preceptors and supervisors.

Award criteria

When nominating an individual for this award the panel is looking for evidence of the quality and impact of their supervision. Applications must include a 500-word statement will be assessed against that provides supporting evidence (examples) to illustrate how the criteria would strengthen the nomination.

Examples (not exhaustive) may include how the preceptor/supervising pharmacist;

motivated and inspired a learner to learn
how they demonstrated respect for the learner as a professional and early career pharmacist
how they provided a safe and engaging workplace for the learner to learn within and instilled professional values and attitudes
how they supported the learner to engage with their learner training program and provided regular and timely feedback
how they demonstrated enthusiasm and passion for the role
how they provided information that is up to date and best practice
how they exposed learners to a range of professional activities to help in the development of professional skills.

Each year the panel will choose one hospital and one community pharmacist to be awarded. Other categories may be added at the discretion of the Selection Panel.

Nomination and selection process

Applications are open from 1 July to 31 August 2026.
Only one nomination per year can be submitted by the same individual. If you submit more than one nomination, they will all be rejected.
A panel appointed by APC will review the nominations against the criteria and determine the successful nominee.
The decision of the Panel is final.

Notification

The successful nominee will be notified of the award by the Australian Pharmacy Council via email and telephone call.

Terms and Conditions

There are no terms or conditions associated with this award. Award monies will be paid to the recipients nominated account immediately following receipt of the award.
