Background

The supervised practice period (intern year) is an exciting time for many pharmacy graduates as it marks the final journey towards becoming a fully competent and independent pharmacist practitioner.

For both intern and preceptor, the intern year can be a very rewarding experience or may turn out to be full of uncertainty and anxiety. Learning in the workplace is challenging. Preceptors have a significant responsibility to help interns make the transition from classroom to the pharmacy.

Workplace based assessment helps bring preceptors and interns together to join the dots between the classroom and the workplace.

It involves regular observation, feedback and measurement of an intern's ability to conduct day to day tasks and duties in real life context using a variety of tools.

Beginning January 2023, all Intern Training Programs (ITPs) will incorporate workplace based assessment tools as part of the requirement for successful completion of their program.

See the workplace based assessment page for educational videos, guides and exemplars on available tools.
