The Department of Health and Aged Care has extended their engagement of the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) to develop accreditation standards and an accreditation system to provide oversight and quality assurance of training programs that would credential pharmacists to undertake the role of an aged care on-site pharmacist and conduct medication management reviews.

APC Chief Executive, Bronwyn Clark says "While consultation of the draft accreditation standards concluded in May 2023, the Department of Health and Aged Care has provided a contract variation to allow for us to further engage with stakeholders on the development of the Performance Outcomes Framework".

"Performance outcomes are statements describing what an individual must achieve and be able to demonstrate on successful completion of a training program" Ms Clark explains. "They provide a framework for education providers to develop and deliver authentic assessments that enable learners to demonstrate that they have achieved the required competencies to undertake these important roles".

"We thank the Department for giving us the opportunity to consult on the performance outcomes, as they complement the accreditation standards we have developed and provide important context for the content and outcomes of training programs."

"This extension will not impact the timelines for publication of the accreditation standards following approval by the Department".

APC will be consulting on the draft performance outcomes in July 2023, ensuring that all interested stakeholders have an opportunity to inform and comment.

It is anticipated that the finalised accreditation standards will be published by late June 2023 and the finalised Performance Outcomes will be published by early August 2023.
