This document reports on our review of advanced and extended pharmacy practice.

We delivered this project in 2013. It supports the recognition of pharmacy practitioners in extended and advanced practice roles. It also helps us to develop accreditation processes for improved practice.

Our project aimed to:

  • review methods that recognise advanced and extended practice both in Australia and internationally
  • consider factors that may affect the recognition of improved practice in Australia

The report includes:

  • findings of a literature review
  • overview of accreditation credentialling pathways in pharmacy
  • evidence-based assessment methods

We define:

  • 'advanced practice' as practice that is so different from that achieved at initial registration that it warrants recognition.
  • 'extended practice' as opportunities that develop skills and knowledge within an area of practice not traditionally associated with a pharmacist's scope (for example, prescribing).
