The Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) welcomes the Pharmacy Board's consultation on their proposal to endorse suitably qualified pharmacists to prescribe scheduled medicines.
The Board's draft Registration Standard and draft Guidelines will be supported by APC's review of the 2023 Accreditation Standards for Pharmacist Prescriber education programs. This review will support the Board's work in strengthening public safety and national consistency across jurisdictions.
APC's public consultation on the revised APC standards will commence following the completion of the Board's consultation on their draft Registration Standard.
APC Chief Standards Officer Kate Spencer states that APC's revised nationally consistent accreditation standards will support the preparation of pharmacist prescribers.
'The revised accreditation standards will support nationally consistent education and training of pharmacist prescribers, ensuring they are able to prescribe medicines safely and effectively within their scope of practice. We are pleased to support the Board’s work to strengthen patient safety, quality use of medicines, and professional accountability,' Ms Spencer stated.
'Healthcare delivery continues to evolve rapidly, and APC is focused on supporting a future‑ready workforce, one that can respond to changing models of care, expanded scopes of practice, and emerging workforce needs across the health system.
'An integrated workforce depends on health professionals working closely and collaboratively across the full continuum of care,' Ms Spencer concluded.
APC's public consultation on the Accreditation Standards for Pharmacist Prescriber Education Programs will commence in June.
