The Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) are delighted to announce the four recipients of the 2025 APC Dr Erica Sainsbury awards. The recipients were recognised at the Emeritus Lloyd Sansom AO Distinguished Lecture Series in Canberra on Monday 24 November.

The APC Dr Erica Sainsbury Awards were established by APC to recognise and reward leaders in pharmacy education and practice annually. Awards were presented to:

  • Dr Joon Soo (Alex) Park, Early Career Pharmacy Educator Award
  • Ms Sophie Jahnecke, Regional Health Service Pharmacist Supervisor Award
  • Mr Ramy Sourial, Community Pharmacist Supervisor Award
  • Ms Hala Musa, Hospital Pharmacist Supervisor Award

The APC Dr Erica Sainsbury Early Career Pharmacy Educator Award recognises and rewards an individual who demonstrates innovation and passion in teaching and who places students first and foremost.

The APC Dr Erica Sainsbury Pharmacist Supervisor Award recognises and rewards pharmacists who display the attributes and skills considered invaluable in the training of pharmacy interns during the period of supervised practice. Interns submit nominations for their preceptor or supervising pharmacists.

APC Chair, Professor Sarah Roberts-Thomson, says she is pleased to honour the recipients of the Dr Erica Sainsbury Awards.

'These individuals reflect the spirit of Dr Sainsbury’s legacy - innovative in their teaching, committed to their interns and unwavering in their focus on supporting competent, confident pharmacists. Their contribution enhances the quality and integrity of pharmacist training across Australia' Prof Roberts-Thomson expressed.

Dr Joon Soo Park, Senior Research Fellow in Pharmacy at the University of Western Australia

Joon Soo Park's career to date reflects his dedication to placing students at the centre of pharmacy education and inspiring the next generation of health professionals.

'As a clinician-educator with lived experience of working in rural and regional Australia, I embed principles of cultural safety and social accountability in both curriculum and student support,' Joon Soo says.

Ms Sophie Jahnecke, Regional Health Service Pharmacist, Barwon Health

Sophie Jahnecke was nominated by three of her interns. One intern says Sophie shows commitment to the pharmacy profession through passionate teaching, empowering them to evolve professionally.

'Sophie always creates a safe and supportive learning environment where we can build confidence, develop critical thinking skills and learn from one another,' they said.

'Sophie’s support extends well beyond daily responsibilities. She prioritises our wellbeing and mental health, recognising the challenges and pressures of intern year and the personal difficulties we may face outside of work,' another intern says.

Mr Ramy Sourial, Community Pharmacist, Chemist Warehouse, Sydney

Ramy Sourial was nominated by three of his interns.

'From my very first day as an intern pharmacist, Ramy created a welcoming and inclusive environment that nurtured both my professional development and personal growth. He consistently treated me not just as an intern, but as a valued and developing colleague, which deeply motivated me to take ownership of my learning," said an intern.

Ms Hala Musa, Hospital Pharmacist, Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Hospital

Hala Musa was nominated by one of her interns. The intern noted she consistently motivated them by exemplifying the highest standards of professionalism, practising ethically, legally, and with deep compassion.

'Hala set aside at least an hour every week for tailored case practice, guiding me through oncology scenarios and ensuring I met every deadline with confidence,' they said.
